The US Supreme Court decided Wednesday to hear TikTok’s challenge to a federal statute that might compel the platform’s shutdown next month. TikTok filed an emergency petition on Monday, contesting the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. The measure, signed into law in April as part of a bigger appropriations package, prevents TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance from running TikTok in the United States unless they complete a “qualified divestiture” that isolates the platform from foreign adversary control. The regulation requires TikTok to end its relationship with ByteDance by January 19, with a possible 90-day extension, or face a nationwide ban imposed through app store and internet hosting limitations.
